During the school holidays I try to purchase some cheap crafty kits. Many of the dollar shops and the like have plenty of them around, and I can normally get different ones each holidays. What I should do is start putting together a box that sits in the top of the wardrobe, and the next time one of my boys says they are bored I will get it out.
Anyway our local shops has just gained one said dollar shops … and it actually is quite a good one, I hope that it lasts! Last week when I was with the boys I picked up these neat glitter and sand art sets .. they looked at me like I was crazy and you could see that they really weren’t that enthused …
Well, they got them out on the weekend … and did not stop doing them for hours … then got them out on the next day .. and the next .. and well you get the idea. They were completely enthralled. Unfortunately now our house is covered from top to tail in glitter, but they have had a ball. I want to get some frames for the finished products so I have to measure them, they look slightly bigger than A4, but that may not be an issue, if I can trim them without losing too much of the picture.
I haven’t taken any final pictures yet, will do that when all three boys have finished both their pictures .. but here are some of the working shots …

As usual, in the school holidays, we try to have a number of crafty projects on the go .. here are some snippets of what we have been doing today.
Jordan and Tom were creating something .. in the end I think it turned into weapons, but I must admit they all played well. Like something out of an Adventure Game for quite a while, no injuries and no tears, so thats a good thing!

Then we discovered some fantastic Toilet Paper Roll Pokemon characters to make, Will & Tom are totally immersed with Pokemon at the moment. It is amazing that something that was created some 14 years ago is still so popular with kids. A whole new generation of them that are Pokemon Crazy! Anyway at DLTK, they have these fantastic templates for creating these fabulous Pokemon! They also have templates for a heap more animals and other critters .. DLTK is one of my favourite sites, for quick and easy craft activities and templates.
These templates come in coloured, or black outline, and Will has had great fun with both!

And lastly some modelling clay, as always is quite popular!

It has been about 6 weeks since I updated my poor neglected blog … oops … it has just been busy and we have had sickness galore in this house. Culminating with me having tonsillitis from hell! I have never been in more pain, and I am mighty glad that I am now on the mend. Although I must admit that Jordan has been slow going recovering from his, and is still getting tired at things.
Well, I am going to attempt to update photos and things from the past 6 weeks, so if you are a regular visitor make sure you scroll down over the weekend as I fill it up.
Today, Jordan and I went shopping in town. Real exciting stuff like a new mixer and some crafty coloured wool. For some reason I have decided to knit finger puppets, and other toys. I have this idea of maybe running a semi-regular group for making things like this for the school fete next year. We will see!
We also managed to do some geocaching .. will update that other site soon with our adventures!
Meanwhile here are my first creations …

Tom had a fun time at cubs making a Space Rocket. They needed to go to Cubs with a plan of what they were going to do, and also with the bits they needed to create it. Apparently Tom finished his pretty quickly!

Well today was a crafting day. After heading off early in the morning for a blood test, I popped into the shopping setting and attacked the cheap shops (great places for craft materials for the kids). I picked up some clay, some clay tools, pop sticks etc. Also went down to HobbySew and bought some Tapestries for the kids to do (they have been fascinated with my cross-stitch.
So here are today’s photos …

With a sick little chook at home, who is starting to feel better, and now that he is taking paracetamol, I have found it necessary to organise activities that keep him fairly quiet and still. Trying to explain to a 6 year old, that he is feeling so much better because the medicine makes his body forget that its hurting is a little hard.
Anyway, they have loved dinosaurs this holidays, so I dug around, found the lids of some old archive boxes, dug up some bits and pieces from the bits & pieces box and we went about creating our Dinosaur lands. It was a lot of fun, and being lap size meant the William could play with them in bed!

Can you spot the lady bugs on each island? hehe I made those out of plasticine. There are butterflies and flowers from my scrapbooking stash, , cellophane, straws, toilet rolls, pom poms etc .. I reckon we can change these around quite easily, add different animals etc. In fact as I type, Tom just took his to add things to it so there may be another post later with the updated version!
The lids of these boxes were fantastic for lap/bed play though. Things don’t fall off, and they are quite sturdy to carry around! A definite winner!

The best thing about lovely cooked Playdough, is that it keeps so well in the fridge. I made this playdough on the 14th February, and it is still perfect!
We were having one of those moments, ‘I’m bored’, ‘there is nothing to do’ … so out came the playdough. It did need a little manipulation to warm up, but then it was all good!

And check it out .. Tom finally lost a tooth, just a few days before his 8th birthday! We were beginning to wonder if he would ever lose any!

I totally love playdough, I love making it but I thought my kids were a bit old for it now … well I was wrong. They asked me to make it today (well Tom asked me), so I checked out the ingredients we had in the cupboard (I did need to restock a couple of things) and went for it.
Now I use a cooked playdough recipe that is on the back of the Cream of Tartar packet. I have tried many recipes and this is by far the best! It is a little messy to make but it definitely gives the best results!
One thing I have noticed is that it also comes out better being cooked in an electric frypan. I don’t know why that is, but again many tries and this is by far the best!
Anyway, ingredients are
- 2 cups plain flour
- 4 tablespoons cream of tartar
- 2 tablespoons cooking oil (I use olive oil, it just seems smoother)
- 1 cup cooking salt (not too coarse)
- 2 cups of water
- food colouring
I just then chuck it all into the electric frypan (on high). I also put the water in first as it doesn’t seem to stick as much at the beginning then. For a bit of fun you can add essential oils, glitter or something to add texture.
You then just stir and stir until it gets solid. It should have a shine to it, but not be greasy. You can also bake this dough, in a slow oven until hard for things like decorations or models.
Anyway here are the pics … (as you can see it looks terrible before it looks good!)

as you can see, it really doesn't look like much at the beginning

keep it moving!

I bought these gorgeous little sewing kits from Spotlight the other week, that were meant for birthday presents. But Thomas spied them and decided that he wanted me to teach him how to sew.

It was lovely to sit quietly with him to do this, as we don’t often share these moments. These kits were great with pre-punched holes, all the bits cut and needles included. Thomas did most of it himself, with me only helping with knot tying and fixing the occaisional mistake.

Well at the moment I still do, maybe ask me next week but for the time being we are having fun! For starters the mornings are pretty good, the boys are old enough to entertain themselves fairly well, and arent snippy enough yet to fight with each other.
Then today we continued working on the city. Tom & Jord are really getting in to using the hot glue guns, although we have had a couple of mad dashes to the cold water tap, but no permanent damage!
So todays photos are snippets of our creations (I must admit I think I am getting more into it than the boys!

The playground equipment, my personal favourites!

William also got this little train money box kit which we put together today. It is the perfect proportions for the city, but hasn’t actually left his hands yet!
