Atop Black Mountain

Yesterday evening we went up to Black Mountain Tower to see what the view was like in the dark. We visited just after we moved here to get a feel for it, but it is a whole different experience at night! I took my camera and tripod to test out some long exposure shots, it was a bit windy so it was hard to get really crisp shots as the camera shook! But it wasn’t bad :)

Questacon

We went off to Questacon, the Science and Technology Centre here in Canberra, this morning, thinking it might not be too busy, we were mistakened. I am glad we went as early as we did, as I am sure if would have gotten worse.

Anyway I am a bit tired, so really can’t think of anything thrilling to say, so I will just let the photos do the talking!

You could spin this ball, it was sitting on a water fountain.

Good old clown game!

No, it’s not real, but Dad was a bit nervous. Jordan said the rush of air was a bit scary as it came dropping down. It stopped a little way above his neck.

Play music with light, it was very very pretty!

Yuck, this model was huge and moved. That lady bug was about basketball size.

Just some neat structure outside. I was trying to take an artistic photo!

So that was our morning at Questacon, we bought a family year pass so we can go back lots of times! I am sure it will be a regular weekend spot!

Carillon

Well I learnt something new today, I found out what a Carillon is, and that here in Canberra we have quite a special one. Unfortunately I didn’t get to hear it played, we chose the wrong day, but I am going to go back!

Basically a massive instrument, made up of brass bells, and controlled by a huge keyboard type structure. Most commonly found throughout Europe in large churches.

So Canberra has one, given to us by Britain .. there was a wedding going on at the grounds, so we waited until they were finished and we wandered across the bridge. It is quite amazing really, but unfortunately not a lot to see as it is all the way up the top! They play music but only Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, I do really want to take the boys back so that they can experience it. Anyway here are a couple of photos!

Then of course there was an obligatory playground discovery as we checked out a new one. This one was quite cool, very modern and the boys had a ball. Except when Jordan fell from the top of the Climbing Wall, granted was less than 2 metres tall, but he freaked, and hurt his arm. We thought a trip to the hospital for x-rays might be in order, but he seems a lot better now, will see in the morning I guess.

Check out William scaling up that twisted ladder, he really has no fear, I don’t think Thomas even attempted it! So these are todays photos, it was a lovely afternoon getting out, although I am pretty tired after my lack of sleep overnight. I am thinking an early night is in order!

That’s My World: Issue 8

I am trying to get back into the swing of my Photography Meme’s that I participate in. Just been so out of whack the last couple of months. I put in on the first ‘That’s My World’ and then haven’t caught up. But this week I have managed it. The following are some pictures I took at a recent excursion with Preschool. They are at Jerrabomberra Wetlands, which also has an education centre run by Birrigai. Canberra is so lucky, having so many of these beautiful spots so close to the metropolitan area, in fact many are part of the metropolitan area and they only take minutes to get to! I love it :)

Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve

Jordan’s first ‘out and about’ Scout activity was a night walk at Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve (place names in Canberra are a nightmare!). Although a bit drizzly it was a great walk, and he has chosen it for his Grey Wolf Hike that is happening this weekend (he had to organise that hike himself).

Some of the pictures are a bit blurry, the light wasn’t very good and I am still learning the ins and outs of my camera to achieve the best shots.

Tennis Star

William has recently discovered the Tennis Racket, he loves it and is actually quite a good shot. Must look into PeeWee Tennis for him next year. Sorry the shots are a bit blurry, but I was concentrating more on the action!

Miracle of Nature

Here in Canberra, Camp Cottermouth is the Camp Grounds owned by the Scout Association. A few years ago a large amount of it was destroyed by bushfires. On my first visit up there I was amazed at how much scarring was still there. Tree that still had the charred markers of a bushfire, but amongst the scars were snippets of nature fighting back. It was truly beautiful to see.
