Hooly Dooly!

It has been about 6 weeks since I updated my poor neglected blog … oops … it has just been busy and we have had sickness galore in this house. Culminating with me having tonsillitis  from hell! I have never been in more pain, and I am mighty glad that I am now on the mend. Although I must admit that Jordan has been slow going recovering from his, and is still getting tired at things.

Well, I am going to attempt to update photos and things from the past 6 weeks, so if you are a regular visitor make sure you scroll down over the weekend as I fill it up.

Today, Jordan and I went shopping in town. Real exciting stuff like a new mixer and some crafty coloured wool. For some reason I have decided to knit finger puppets, and other toys. I have this idea of maybe running a semi-regular group for making things like this for the school fete next year. We will see!

We also managed to do some geocaching .. will update that other site soon with our adventures!

Meanwhile here are my first creations …

School Holidays Day#13

We didn’t do a whole lot today. It was a bit rainy and horrible and I had an awfully sore throat so I took it easy. William had a bit of a relapse and was feeling rather horrid as well.

I did start some knitting though, making a jumper for William seeing as he is the only one of the three that would wear it, now that it is starting to cool down I don’t mind doing a bit of knitting.

We did go out to dinner for Jordan’s birthday, unfortunately William got sick whilst we were out and vomited at the table (luckily in a lunch box we had handy). Sam took him home, we quickly finished our dinner and went home as well. I forgot to take a photo at dinner, as we were all worrying about William.

So that was our day, hopefully tomorrow will be a bit more active!

And I did a quick Layout this morning with one of the photos I took the other day at the Playground.

Scrapped ith ‘Boys R Us‘, and ‘Photo Edge Masks‘ by Lindsay Jane Designs.

The photo came out so well. I am always trying to get a good swing shot like this, but they never turn out!

National Museum of Australia

One of the benefits of living in Canberra is the vast array of cultural and educational experiences that are available for kids and families. And most of them are just a lot of fun! Last year we had a membership to Questacon, which defintely got used well. We went atleast every school holidays, sometimes twice, and then at other random times during the year.

I have taken the kids to the National Museum, Australian National Botanic Gardens, the Australian War Memorial, the National Zoo & Aquarium and many of our local Libraries.

I myself have also gone to the National Art Gallery to see the Masterpieces from Paris Collection which was just awesome!

I got to see Starry Night by Van Gogh in the real life. I was in awe!

Today I also went to the National Library, I didn’t delve too far into it, but there are exhibitions and readings there. I am very much looking forward to spending some time there!

Anyway for many of these things I belong to the mailing lists, because it means you are always the first to know! I must admit I don’t always read them, because I don’t always have the time but I did look through the National Museum Newsletter this morning and discovered two very cool things.

The first was for me, Holly Throsby is performing therein a couple of weeks, for free on the lawns on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin. So I am going to head along to that! I quite like her, very mellow and just perfect for a summers evening on the lake! Check out the info here, especially if you are going to be in Canberra on the 20th Feb!

The second thing isn’t new, I think it must have been offered all school holidays, but it is their Family Trails. A self guided, self paced activity for kids aged 5-12. You can check it our here. I am definitely going to take the kids along to that one.

Ok that is all for now, I just had to share some of my finds! More landcare tomorrow possibly .. the little ones also have Little Athletics, might try to get along to it after Landcare with Jordan.

Updating

Phew .. I just realised I have not updated our blog since the 29th November, and here it is the 19th January! All I can say is that it has been a hectic couple of months! I would like to say that things are going to calm down now, but knowing our household I don’t think that is going to be the case.

Anyway I am going to spend tonight updating my blog with photos taken over the last month or so, including some snapshots from the Jamboree. And again I will be making the effort to update almost daily :)

School Words

Even though both Tom & Jord struggles with their reading they achieved letter recognition much quicker than William seems to have. It is a work in progress and something that we aim to rectify. One way is to put together our own books, Williams loves it as the pictures are familiar to him and he chooses words to be featured.

So first came his alphabet book, which is often uses as a reference for his writing, sort of like a dictionary, which is cool. Then we got his birthday book from last year printed, and he loves that.

Now I am working on a book of school words, that is words that he might come across at school, in his writing.

Here are the first few pages.

As with the others, I will finally get it printed at either FrogPrints or SnapFish, although I am awaiting my XBook books, so depending on how they turn out I might choose them!

Nostalgia

You know those moments, when you come across something that makes you think back. Some silly memories is triggered .. lol

Well that happened to me this morning, wandering through the digiscrap galleries like I do, I spied a layout about a baby having a bath in the sink and it reminded me of a song my mum used to sing to me.

We lived in France at the time, Aix-en-Provence actually, and we used to walk to school. It was quite a walk and mum used to tell us stories (like Macbeth or Don Quixote .. hehe) and also sing. ‘Your Baby has gone down the plughole’ was a form favourite, my mum used to sing it in the best voice, and we used to be in hysterics.

I love it when those memories come forth!

And for the sake of nostalgia I googled the lyrics … not sure if this is exactly what my mum sang, but it made me giggle nonetheless.

A mother was bathin’ her baby one night
The youngest of ten, a poor little mite
The mother was fat and the baby was fin
T’was nawt but a skellington wrapped up in skin

The mother turned round for the soap from the rack
She weren’t gone a minute, but when she got back
Her baby had gone, and in anguish she cried
“Oh, where is my baby?”, and the angels replied

Your baby has gorn dahn the plug’ole
Your baby has gorn dahn the plug
The poor little thing was so skinny and thin
He shoulda been bathed in a jug

Your baby is perfik’ly happy
He won’t need no bathin’ no more
He’s workin’ his way through the sewers
Not lost, just gone on before

I’m reading this …

Picked this up from the library, unsure what it would be like. Haven’t read or even heard about the author before, but I am enjoying some the the Young Adult fiction at the moment.

It is called Alyzon Whitestarr by Isobelle Carmody, and is quite unusual but extremely intriguing. A bit of mystery, a bit of the extnded abilities.. lol .. it is hard to explain, but I am really enjoying it! I think I will investigate some more of her books.
